Using a Canon EOS R8 or R6 Mark II as a photo booth camera on Mac
The Canon EOS R8 and R6 Mark II are popular photo booth cameras. This guide covers connecting them to photo booth software on a Mac and the settings that keep the camera stable all night, based on testing with both real cameras.
Connecting
- Use a USB-C cable that carries data (some charging-only cables don't). Plug it straight into the Mac, not through a hub or the monitor's USB ports.
- Turn the camera on in stills mode.
- Open the booth software and choose the Canon camera on the camera settings page. Live view should appear within a few seconds.
Daylabooth uses Canon's own camera SDK. Measured with real cameras: live view at about 28–29 frames per second, and remote capture on the R6 Mark II takes around 0.6 seconds per photo.
Camera settings to change before the event
- Turn off auto power off. A camera that sleeps mid-event is the most common problem.
- Use the camera's DC coupler / AC adapter instead of a battery. Four or five hours of continuous live view drains a battery.
- Image quality: RAW+JPEG or JPEG. The software uses the JPEG; the RAW stays on the card as a backup. Don't use RAW only.
- Always keep a card in. It's your backup if anything happens to the Mac (good software never deletes files from the card).
- Focus. Mark where guests stand and use a face-detection AF mode.
Automatic vs photographer mode
Automatic: guests tap the screen, the booth counts down and fires the camera. Good for unattended booths.
Photographer: a photographer poses the guests and fires the shutter on the camera; the photo appears on the booth screen instantly. Tap X to retake any shot. Great for weddings. Both the R8 and R6 Mark II work in this mode with the rear screen still active.
Common problems
| Symptom | Try |
|---|---|
| Software can't see the camera | Swap the USB cable · plug into the Mac directly · quit other apps that may hold the camera (e.g. EOS Utility) |
| Camera switches off mid-event | Turn off auto power off · use a DC coupler |
| Photos don't arrive | Make sure it isn't set to RAW only · check the card isn't full |
